Cornell recently invested in a new piece of equipment for the shop. The MAZAK will replace the makino for the machining of pump parts. The MAZAK will primarily be used in the machining of volutes, but will have capabilities of running a wide variety of parts. The addition of this new machine will improve the manufacturing capabilities here at Cornell, allowing the shop to run larger parts than ever before. The MAZAK will also allow for improved yields, better lead times, and reduced cycle times.
The Mazak will be installed in the shop before the end of February and will be running alongside the Makino until the transition is complete, which will take a few months. Cornell expects that at least 80% of parts currently being run on the Makino will be handled by the MAZAK by the end of April.
The investment in such a machine is part of Cornell’s commitment to manufacturing in the United States. Over the last year, Cornell has upgraded three key pieces of equipment on the manufacturing floor, and will continue to invest in equipment which expands and improves Cornell’s in-house manufacturing capabilities.
