FROM KATU NEWS: Local company's pumps helping to dry out New York after storm

FROM KATU:

CLACKAMAS, Ore. – Giant pumps made by a local company are now helping the Northeast recover from Hurricane Sandy, and part of the effort to help was sending some of the pumps ahead of the storm.

According to officials at Cornell Pump Company, that's a big difference between preparations for this hurricane and Hurricane Katrina that hit New Orleans in 2005.

Pumps are already moving water in Manhattan at flooded Bellevue Hospital, but there's still a lot below ground in New York's subway system.

Cornell's pumps have been in action in New York in the past, removing water from the subway under the collapsed twin towers after 9/11.

Cornell is one of just four manufacturers in the country that makes "dewatering" pumps designed to chop up watery debris and keep on running.

According to its website, its pumps can pump up to 31,000 gallons a minute.

The company shipped 200 pumps to the New Orleans area after Hurricane Katrina. It shipped some east ahead of Hurricane Sandy.

"What we saw this year was a lot of people moving product there well ahead of the storm anticipating the flooding," said Cornell's vice president Marcus Davi.

Cornell's managers are proud some of their pumps are already working to help the Northeast recover.

"Every hurricane season, you get these kinds of problems, and our pumps are the first to be deployed – absolutely," said Davi.

The Army Corps of Engineers has given Cornell a heads up to get ready to ship more pumps to the Northeast, but it doesn't know how many yet.

Cornell Pump Company’s Rapid Response Pumps Ready to Meet Dewatering Needs of Hurricane Sandy

Cornell pumps have helped in flooding events such as Mt. St. Helens eruption and Hurricane Katrina, as well as dewatering Ground Zero after the September 11th attacks. Oregon-based pump manufacturer has pumps ready to ship to disaster areas affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Clackamas, Oregon – October 31, 2012 —With winds and rain still lashing the East Coast and Mid-west, Cornell Pump Company stands ready to help in clean-up efforts. Some of Cornell’s most popular and powerful pump models are available for immediate shipment, helping them get into the field in days, instead of weeks.

Cornell pumps have the capacity to pump up to 31,000 gallons per minute (emptying the equivalent of an Olympic-sized swimming pool in 20.3 minutes.) Cornell’s Redi-Prime® pumps are especially popular with municipalities, because they can re-prime and begin pumping without the need for an attendant to monitor the pump. Our self-priming (ST) pumps and hydraulic submersible pumps are also in high demand in weather related dewatering.

“We’ve already had inquiries from governmental agencies,” said Marcus Davi, Cornell Pump Company VP of Sales. “Our reputation for quality and reliability make us a good partner in responding to a disaster of this magnitude.”

Throughout our 65 year history, Cornell pumps have been instrumental in helping dewater after disasters. Some notable efforts include:
  • In 1980, Cornell pumped out Spirit Lake to keep it from flooding the valley below after the Mount Saint Helens eruption. Twenty Model 10YB Engine Drive Units were utilized on a floating barge.
  • After September 11, 2001, Cornell air freighted Model 8NHTA Pumps to New York City to pump out the flooded subway area of World Trade Center.
  • Cornell had over 200 pumps working in New Orleans to pump out the flooded city after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

To learn more about the pumps ready to ship, visit Cornell’s blog, hosted on our newly revamped website, cornellpump.com, under the news section.

Additionally, for every pump sold Cornell Pump will donate to the American Red Cross for disaster relief. The donation will help the Red Cross provide food, shelter, cleaning supplies, and emotional support to people in communities from Georgia to Maine impacted by the hurricane.

Cornell Pump Announces New Line of End Gun Booster Pumps, the Cornell Edge

Cornell Pump, a leader in agricultural pumping designs since 1946, has created a new product line ideally suited for OEM center pivot booster applications. These pumps allow farmers to get water further into their fields; increasing yields and revenue.

Clackamas, Oregon – October 11, 2012 – Cornell Pump Company, an industry leader in irrigation pumps, announced today it is expanding its line of irrigation solutions with a new line of end gun booster pumps, the Cornell Edge. Designed to help irrigators using center pivot systems, the Edge pumps water up to 110 feet beyond the end pivot, significantly increasing the usable land for crop production. The end gun booster pump propels water into the corners of the irrigated field, increasing useable land by up to 20 percent.

Cornell’s Edge comes in two different pump models. The 2C unit has a three horse power motor, and is able to pump up to 210 gallons per minute, with a head of 80 feet (34PSI). The larger 2B unit features a 5 horse power motor, will pump up to 230 gallons per minute, and offers a head up to 105 feet (45PSI).

Distinguishing the Edge is Cornell’s legendary design and reputation for reliability. The rotating assembly retrofits into many competitors volutes, but offers at least the same if not better performance characteristics than the original pump. “We've been diligent in getting this right for the market,” said Cornell’s agricultural market manager Bob Jansen, who led the Edge project. “The Edge features heavy duty cast iron construction, a motor built to Cornell specifications that has an auto reset on the motor thermostat, and shower curtain shield motor moisture protection. The Edge pumps are competitively priced and offer superior performance.”

In addition to features such as standard 2 inch NPT discharge, and 2.5 inch NPT suction, Edge pumps offer an industry leading two-year warranty from Cornell. “Cornell stands by the pumps we design and manufacture in Portland, Oregon,” said Cornell President Robert Ray, “We’ve built our reputation of quality since 1946—and the Edge is another great product we’re producing to help our agricultural customers get the most yield for their effort. ”

More information about the Edge is featured on Cornell’s newly revamped website.
